FAMILY FUN: Digital Crossover Board Games by Hampton Rhodes

FAMILY FUN: Digital Crossover Board Games

Every parent remembers and is influenced by their own childhood – good or bad – and what were the best times that they had with their family and friends. Whether it was at hangout parties or sleepovers, vacations or just another Saturday night – board games played a big part in our growing up and maturation process. And we remember these times with great fondness.

When we become parents and later on – grandparents, we want to share that fun we recall, but now we want to share it with our own kids and grandkids – some of the activities and games that we remember as being the “best-times-ever!”

A lot of us remember marathon board games that went long into the night – board games like Monopoly, Clue, Life, Battleship, Scrabble, Chess and Checkers, and others afforded us hours and hours of rainy-day fun. And guess what? Board games still can! And not all of the newer versions of board games require a computer!

In this age of darkly dystopian electronic video games where destruction and vandalism of treasures gains game points, where killing hookers and trashing automobiles elevate a game player’s status and powers, and where interplanetary species dominance is the end game – the classic board games that we grew up with are still just as fun and intriguing to kids today as they were when you were a kid!

Here’s a shortlist of a few of the board games that are still around, only now they have evolved and are now electronically adapted to smartphones or consoles (and some with just batteries!) for even more portable fun and engagement:

The Uncharted: Monopoly Board Game
The world’s favorite family board game brings you another exciting edition of MONOPOLY Uncharted.

Choose your favorite bespoke token, tour locations featured in all the Uncharted games, but watch out for expensive icons, jail and bankruptcy.

Build houses and hotels and trade your way to success.

The Fast-Dealing Property Trading Game is fun for the whole family.

Follow the path of globetrotting hero Nathan Drake as he hunts treasure in locations across the Uncharted games. Tour the board from the Amazon Temple to Avery’s Ship via the London Underground and Madagascar. Will you take a ride on Hog Wild or stowaway on a cruise ship? Build houses and hotels on your favorite Uncharted locations and watch the rent come pouring in. Take your chances with Fate and Fortune cards as you tour the board as one of the iconic Uncharted bespoke tokens. You can own it all!

Doctor Who Cluedo Mystery Board Game
In this special edition of Doctor Who Cluedo – The Classic Mystery Board Game sees you become a real detective to find clues and solve the mystery that awaits you.

Alongside your favorite characters including Half-face man, Mancini and Cyberman, enter special locations including The forest, Doctor Chang’s office and The Bank of Karabraxos, and uncover the hidden secrets.

Cluedo is fun for the whole family as you decide: Who did it? Where did it occur? And what weapon did the culprit use?

Was it Cyberman in the Forest with the Golden Arrow? Or Mancini in Doctor Chang’s office with a newspaper?

The Classic Mystery board game is fun for the whole family.

Missy, formerly the master, escaped from Gallifrey when the Doctors freed the planet from the Time War in The Day of The Doctor. Now, only she knows its whereabouts. But as she watched the Doctor and Clara on their adventures through season 8, she left a vital clue to its whereabouts somewhere in space and time and one of the doctor’s enemies has found it. Can you figure out what the clue is, where she left it and who holds the key to locating Gallifrey and sending the doctor home?

So although these new versions of old board games may be played differently with different tools and gadgets, platforms and players, and hard-cable and wireless electronics that we didn’t have growing up, the game’s are still pretty much the same.

They have the same learning opportunities built into them – strategy, money management, critical thinking, verbal skills, math mastery, teamwork, mystery solving and other important life lessons that must be reinforced again and again in each and every child’s developing mind. The kids are yours and the choice is yours. But the blueprints for the life lessons that they learn are uniquely theirs, and will influence them the rest of their lives.

As for me, I want to have a voice in what lessons my kids and grandkids learn, I want to be a part of their development and a great memory for them when they are older. I’d like to be a positive influence on who they are today, and whom they are striving to emulate through their future adult behavior.

And the Board games that I grew up playing can also help with my kids and grand kids – even if they are modernized through electronics.
