Hampton’s Weekend Jaunts by Hampton Rhodes

Hampton’s Weekend Jaunts

Weekend Jaunts are about variety and doing different things than what you ordinarily do. A chance to break your routines, get out on the road and see how other people in your nearby area and around the country are spending their leisure time enjoying themselves and having a whole lot of fun.

This week, Z’Scoop brings you a variety of events around America from Eagles and Totems in Sitka, Alaska to Summer Stock Theater and a Swim in Westport, Connecticut; from the International Tarpon Rodeo in Grand Isle, Louisiana to the International Gift and Craft Show in Laughlin, Nevada.

Take a minute and discover what’s going on the last weekend in July in someplace that might be near you!

Eagles and Totems, Sitka, AK
Growing from a backyard, volunteer-run operation, the Alaska Raptor Center has become Alaska’s foremost bald eagle hospital and educational center, as well as one of the state’s premier visitor attractions. Each year, the Alaska Raptor Center provides medical treatment to 100-200 injured bald eagles and other birds. Their goal is to release its patients back into the wild; some, however, are injured so severely they could not survive in the wild even after rehabilitation. These birds may join the Raptors-in-Residence, providing excitement and education for more than 36,000 annual visitors and for the 15,000 school children they reach through the Adopt-A-Raptor program and Classroom Presentations around the country. The Alaska Raptor Center’s 17-acre campus borders the Tongass National Forest, a temperate coastal rainforest, and the Indian River in Sitka, Alaska, and features award-winning natural habitats for our 19 Raptors-in-Residence.

Alaska’s oldest National Park isn’t a big one — only 113 acres — but it’s rich with history and there’s plenty to do. Sitka National Historic Park/Totem Park offers hiking trails, ranger-led interpretive walks, carving demonstrations, ethnographic displays, and more. The park’s main attractions are the roughly 20 totem poles and the beautiful coastal rainforest, which you can explore on your own or with park rangers. And kids will love the Junior Ranger program. The Russian Bishop’s House is part of the park as well, but is located closer to downtown.

Theater and a Swim, Westport, CT
Westport has a feeling of a New England town with the convenience of modern life. Residents and visitors enjoy the relaxed, high quality of life due to the town’s commitment to conserve the natural resources, preserve traditions and support community events. Just two of the attractions we’d like to point out are the Westport Country Playhouse and the annual Point-to-Point Swim.

Through July 29th, the Westport Country Playhouse is featuring “Grounded,” a play written by George Brant and directed by Liz Diamond, where a pregnant, grounded ace fighter pilot struggles to find the balance between motherhood and mission. Reassigned to the “chair force” as a drone pilot near Las Vegas, the realities of war and suburban comfort collide. This thrilling tale offers a glimpse into one soldier’s fight to define herself in the modern world. Tickets are $30 to $50 but hurry to make reservations!

When: through July 29th.
Where: Westport Country Playhouse
Tickets: $30 – $50

The Westport Weston Family YMCA is sponsoring the 39th Annual Point-to-Point Swim at Compo Beach in Westport on Sunday, July 30th. All proceeds from Point to Point go to help support the YMCA’s Annual Campaign. The YMCA uses the Annual Campaign Fund to provide financial assistance for programs like swim lessons, child care and camp. Through efforts like the Point-to-Point Swim, the YMCA is able to provide over $400K in financial assistance and indirect community support every year.
