The Outlaw

screen-shot-2016-10-11-at-11-53-23-pm“The Outlaw” is a 1943 black & white American Western film, directed by both Howard Hughes and Howard Hawkes, debuting Jack Buetel and Jane Russell. The film also stars Thomas Mitchell, and Walter Huston, and tells the story of the life of legendary outlaw Billy the Kid, including his partnership with Doc Holliday and his clashes with lawman Pat Garrett. The film was notorious because of Hughes’ concentration on newcomer Jane Russell’s abundant cleavage, and national release of the film in America was delayed due to censorship laws, arbitration and re-shooting of certain scenes. After its initial release under Hughes’ orders the film was later advertised hyping Jane Russell as the sole star, leaving co-star male ingénue Jack Buetel as an “also-ran” in the race for box office bounty, begging the question — who was the real outlaw of this movie?
