The Rick Hall autobiography, “The Man From Muscle Shoals: My Journey from Shame to Fame,” is being developed into a limited music drama series by Johnny Depp’s production company Infinitum Nihil, alongside Richard Branson’s Virgin Produced, Joshua D. Maurer and Alixandre Witlin’s City Entertainment, and IM Global TV.
Revealing the rich tapestry of stories, characters and talents behind the creation of the Muscle Shoals sound, this proposed new series will explore challenges and obstacles that Rick Hall has overcome in his personal life, in the dog-eat-dog music business, and with establishing a successful racially harmonious land enterprise in the South.
Following the true life roller-coaster story of Rick as a remarkable record producer, songwriter, publisher and musician, and the exceptional legacy he has created, the show will entrance viewers with an amazing TV experience. According to Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones, “We started to hear this sound coming out. There was an amazing feel, kind of magnetic I suppose … and then after a while this word Muscle Shoals … and I said, if I ever got the chance, we’ve got to go down there.”
Rick’s ground-breaking and gutsy drive metamorphosed sleepy little Muscle Shoals into a singular breeding ground for new music, inexplicably attracting the biggest names in music history for creative recording produced and engineered by Rick Hall.
Who will play Rick? “That’s something I’ve thought about a couple of times,” says Hall. “And I think that George Clooney and Johnny Depp could do a good job.”
Hall established the funky, catchy and distinctively Southern music vibe, pioneering it as a seminal new sound; stood up to music production powerhouses in LA, Nashville, New York and Memphis; and launched the careers of hundreds of superstars. “This was revolutionary stuff; on the records you might not even know who was black and who was white,” said U2’s Bono.
“Rick Hall and his small Alabama recording studio … transformed the music industry. His personal, professional journey and the incredible talent he worked with is an extraordinary story that will make a great television series,” said IM Global TV president Mark Stern.
Hall’s Muscle Shoals FAME studio generated literally hundreds of gold and platinum records, establishing legendary songs and artists: Wilson Pickett’s “Mustang Sally,” Aretha Franklin’s “I Ain’t Never Loved A Man,” Staple Singers’ “I’ll Take You There,” And the Rolling Stones “Brown Sugar.”
We can’t wait! Stay tuned to Z’Scoop for updates about this fabulous new series.
