You may think the best time to visit the mountains is in the fall for peak foliage. Yes – that is pretty awesome. But think again.
Located eleven miles from the nearest town, nestled on 175 half-mile-high acres in between the Nantahala and the Joyce Kilmer National forests, in North Carolina’s Great Smoky Mountains and within viewing distance of the western tip of the Dragon’s Tail of the crystal-clear Lake Santeetlah, lies a piece of four-seasoned heaven-on-earth called the Snowbird Mountain Lodge.
Snowbird Mountain Lodge is a magical, historic retreat secluded away from life as we know it, but it has remained for 75 years as ‘life as it should be.’ Beautiful vistas of mountains, lakes valleys and clouds, this resort offers escape from the hyper-connected digital world into a paradise of nature walks, some of the finest fly-fishing, gourmet food with dazzling presentation and the opportunity to reconnect, face-to-face with family and friends
Brothers Arthur and Edwin Wolfe, who found their way to western North Carolina on a vacation junket to escape the heat of Chicago, Built Snowbird Mountain Resort in 1940 and opened it to the public for business in 1941 as a retreat/resort – it was never intended for anything else. Arthur was in the travel business and had been arranging vacations for urban dwellers seeking to avoid the swelter of mid-western summers.
Snowbird Mountain Lodge is now owned and operated by Robert Rankin and has been for the last 21 years. Rankin and his family live on premises and have knitted together an impressive collection of experts and events to entice and thrill the most jaded nature adventurers. Guests can arrange for a massage or yoga sessions, or take a forest walk, rock on the deck, or hike pristine trails through the acreage of giant hemlocks, ancient pines and colorful poplar trees.
Enjoy canoeing or stand-up paddle boarding on the lake or nearby whitewater river adventures. Guests can also enjoy fly-fishing and trout weekends enjoying the excitement of catching Brooks, Browns and Rainbows, or partake in specially arranged, renowned sommelier-approved and paired gourmet wine dinners.
Fabulous nature photography workshops, music weekends for novices and experts, guided meadow and mountain hikes, and more activities are available at Snowbird Mountain Resort. Say the word, state your interests, and Innkeeper Rankin and the staff will tailor your visit!
At Snowbird Mountain Lodge, all meals are included in the nightly guest rate, as are the other amenities. Special events and custom packages are at an additional fee. Please note that one of the luxurious attractions at the Lodge is that Snowbird cannot accommodate children under twelve years-of-age or pets of any kind.
